Made To Be Autonomous
I write at the intersection of folk life, history, culture, human behavior, and the strange contradictions of being alive in modern America. Some of these books begin on back roads. Others begin in old stories, family histories, forgotten traditions, or questions that refuse to leave me alone.
At a time when so much of life is becoming faster, automated, polished, and disconnected, I am interested in the opposite: the messy, beautiful, stubbornly human things that cannot be manufactured. Through stories, folk life, history, art, and the study of human behavior, my books go looking for the roots beneath modern life—and ask what they can still teach us about who we are.
